Swine flu designer face masks

Entrepreneur bets on line of skin lotions for athletes

Ready. Set. Moisturize!

Entrepreneur Josh Shaw spent the better part of last year grilling athletes about their gear - not shoes, gloves or spandex shorts, but what they slather on their skin.

“Every one of them complained about the fact that the skin care industry has ignored athletes,” said Shaw, who, at 33, is launching his third business venture. “It wasn’t just a hole in the market - it was a crater.”

Shaw believes he’ll be able to fill that void with his sports-focused skin care line. Mission Product landed in stores like Foot Locker, Champs Sports and City Sports last month and now includes a sunscreen, lip protector, anti-friction cream, foot gel and a gel moisturizer. The line was the brainchild of ultraendurance athlete Charlie Engle, who came to Shaw not long after finishing a 111-day run last year across the Sahara Desert.

And our favorite phrase, from Mission’s Revive Gel: Giving Everything You’ve Got Takes a Lot Out of You.

But once you go beyond the cool, sleek look, the world-class athletes and superior website, there had better be quality products or a lot of money spent on flash and sizzle will go down the drain. Fortunately, like a player who tells you he’s good, and then backs it up in the game, Mission’s products deliver solutions for skincare worthy of their dynamic marketing.
