Executive Takeaway

Excellens Solutions has two things none of the three San Diego competitors reviewed show: named methods on its homepage (the 4P Multiple Maximizer Method, the Value Maximizer Blueprint, a five-step Sale Roadmap) and a CEO who writes and films in her own voice. The website names its buyer clearly, but it opens with a value promise a competitor also uses, carries no video, and sends visitors who click its LinkedIn icon to a no-access page. Off-site, the firm's three channels relay Lamar's posts rather than telling the firm's own story. The next build is a homepage that leads with the buyer's lens as an idea, with Lamar on camera explaining it.

Website Score — By Criterion

Seven criteria, each scored 1 to 7 by Alan Power and Gair Maxwell. The sum is your website score out of 49. Vistage room average: 13 to 14. A score above 20 is genuinely strong.

2
First Impression
Immediate 2-3 sec WOW factor. Instant clarity on who this brand speaks to.
The navy wordmark and phone number sit above the fold. The headline, "Get the Best Value when you Sell Your Business," is a value promise close to Pacifica Advisors' "Maximize the value of your business," and the buyer's-lens line sits underneath in smaller type. The next build is a headline that leads with the lens and names the $2M to $50M owner in the first two seconds.
1
Impact
Signature homepage video. Genuine human connection, cinematic and story-based.
No video. The hero is text over a faded stock photo of a touch pad, while Lamar already appears on camera inside one of the firm's own blog posts, so the raw material for a homepage piece exists. The next build is a homepage video in which she explains the buyer's lens in her own words.
4
Originality
Highly distinctive identity. Instantly recognizable. Not a template.
The service structure, listings, sale prep, M&A advising and consulting, is standard for the category. What none of the three San Diego competitors reviewed show is a named method, and Excellens has three: the 4P Multiple Maximizer Method, the Value Maximizer Blueprint, and a five-step Successful Business Sale Roadmap with a Five D backup plan for death, disability, disaster, divorce and disagreement. The homepage names the 4P method without showing how it works. The next step is a page that walks an owner through it.
2
Culture
Video evidence from real people indicating a destination employer. Not a values list.
Meet Our Team shows four real people in photographs: Lamar Rutherford, Gustavo F. Lanatta, Melissa Poler and Jordi Lanatta. Each appears with a name and title only, with no bio, story or video. The next build is a short bio and a clip for each advisor so an owner meets the team before the first call.
4
Consistency
Track record of publishing current, original content across platforms.
The blog shows dates at index and item level, and four posts have gone up since late summer, the most recent in October. Before that? September and October 2024, then nothing for almost two years. The next step is holding the current rhythm on the site itself.
4
Audience Reach
Numbers indicating a growing community. Evidence of genuine engagement.
The site names its buyer on three pages: owners with $2 million to $50 million in revenue who want to sell "in the next 1 to 5 years." Five testimonials back it, two fully named and three attributed by role, and a booking page is one click away. The LinkedIn icon in the header and footer opens a LinkedIn no-access page, and the site offers no newsletter sign-up. The next builds are a working LinkedIn link and a way for a visitor to subscribe.
3
Visuals
Cohesive visual elements reflecting brand spirit. Distinctive design language.
The palette holds together across pages, navy with red-framed team photos, and the wordmark is a real mark. Imagery is stock. Credited Unsplash photos sit inside a standard Wix layout whose footer still reads 2022. The next build is custom photography of Lamar and the team in place of stock.
IDEA Score — The Signal Before the Click

How You Show Up in the World

The IDEA Score measures what happens before someone reaches your website, the off-site signal that shapes perception from the first search, the LinkedIn scroll, the founder post.

21
out of 49
IDEA Score — Digital Footprint

The Idea That Changes Everything

Seven axes. Each one measures a different dimension of how your off-site signal lands, not what your website says, but what the world hears before anyone clicks.

Pull vs. push. Category of one vs. category of many. A founder voice vs. a corporate signal. These are the levers that determine whether a prospect arrives already interested, or arrives already skeptical.

2
Pull vs. Push
Content creates gravity vs. broadcast/promotional
Lamar's narrative posts reach the firm's pages, which is the raw material to work with. On the company channels they arrive as bare links: the October 12 and October 9 LinkedIn reshares drew 2 reactions and 1, and the latest Facebook link shows none. The next build is company posts written for the firm's own audience, with the story in the post rather than behind a link.
4
ONLY vs. Category
Proprietary language/named POV vs. sounds like every competitor
The buyer's-lens line appears in the company LinkedIn tagline, the Facebook intro and Lamar's newsletter title, and the three competitors reviewed lead with other lines. The rest of the company copy is the category's best-value promise. The next step is building the firm's off-site language around the lens.
2
Audience Building
Clear who it's for AND building following beyond buyers
The firm's channels have 603 followers on LinkedIn, 204 on Facebook and 38 on X, and no company newsletter or series brings anyone back. The Buyer's Lens, the one repeat mechanism, lives on Lamar's personal profile. The next build is a company-side path into the newsletter.
3
Different-er vs. Better
Competes on distinctiveness/belief vs. features/specs/price
The firm's own off-site claim is about getting the best value, an outcome every broker promises. The beliefs that set it apart, such as the owner who becomes the company's ceiling and the buyer's hard look at add-backs, reach the company pages only through reshared posts. The next step is the firm stating those beliefs as its own.
2
IDEA vs. Best Practices
Organizing belief visible across all channels vs. channel-by-channel
LinkedIn, Facebook and X all relay the same posts from Lamar's profile: LinkedIn and Facebook most recently on October 12, X on September 11. Relays move one story outward. No channel tells it in its own terms, and the firm has no Instagram or YouTube. The next build is one through-line that each channel carries in its own format.
6
Founder/Leader Voice
Named human with consistent opinionated first-person presence
Lamar is the brand off-site: nine first-person items in six weeks on her LinkedIn, a named newsletter, and company channels set up to carry her voice. It is one voice with a recognizable buyer's-lens point of view. The next step is giving that voice a home on the firm's own channels, in the firm's own posts and video.
2
Cultural Relevance
Signal connects to a larger shift in the world vs. exists in isolation
Coverage that names the firm is thin: the July Forbes article links to Excellens through Lamar's quote, and an SD Voyager interview, a format built from her own answers, carries the firm's name. Beyond that, own profiles and broker listings. No panels, no association roles. The next step is the firm hosting other owners' stories, the way Lamar already hosts speakers for her Vistage groups.

How to Build Your Legend

Short Term

Answer the B.H.O.Q. for the firm
Clarify: who is Excellens beyond a broker that gets the best value? Pieces of the answer appear across the site, from the buyer's lens to the 4P method and the Five D backup plan. Decide which idea leads.
Decide whose voice the firm speaks in
Clarify: the company channels relay Lamar today. Decide whether Excellens speaks through her, or as a team with Gustavo, Melissa and Jordi visible beside her.
Decide which channels earn a place
Clarify: three company channels relay the same links to 845 people combined. Choose the ones that will get a format of their own and let the rest go.

Medium Term

Identity: homepage rebuilt around the lens
A headline that names the owner and the idea, with Lamar on video explaining how a buyer looks at a business.
Identity: the 4P method made visible
A page and a short visual that walk an owner through the method, so the firm's named methods do the explaining.
Growth: a path from the site to the newsletter
A sign-up on the site that feeds The Buyer's Lens, so readers become a list the firm owns.
Competitive Landscape

Who's Setting the Pace

Shoreline Partners
Sell-side M&A advisor and broker-dealer | San Diego
Leads with "Strategic M&A Advisors" and a record dating to 1992, backed by ten testimonials (seven fully named) and a team page with personal bios. No homepage video, no named method and no visible dates on about fifty resource articles. Its LinkedIn page, with 817 followers, is running a series of posts on its core values.
SeaRidge Advisory
Lower-middle-market sell-side advisor | San Diego
Eight named verticals, each with its own specialist broker brand, and 29 dated articles, the latest in September. No testimonials and no social links, and the two founders appear as initials rather than photos.
Pacifica Advisors
M&A advisor, $1.5M to $25M EBITDA | San Diego and Austin
Twelve industry pages and membership marks from IBBA, AMAA and ACG. Leads with "Maximize the value of your business." A team of fifteen shown without bios, and most articles carry no date.
The Open Position
Where Excellens Can Stand Apart
None of the three names a method of its own, and none puts a leader on camera. Excellens has both: named methods on its homepage and a CEO who writes, and films, in her own voice. Bringing the two together on the homepage is the open position in this set.
